What do I get with a survey?

That depends on the type of survey you require.

For most surveys involving property lines you can expect to have your property corners set with permanent markers (iron rods, pipes, concrete or granite bounds etc...).  At PSI we use 30" long by 5/8" re-bar rods whenever possible.  When a corner falls in an impervious material such as asphalt or concrete a railroad spike, gin spike, drill hole or other method of marking may be utilized.  Wooden or other temporary materials should only be accepted in corner locations that are expected to be disturbed and should be replaced with permanent markers once those areas have been stabilized.  All or only some of your corners may be set depending on the situation.  Lot lines where visibility between corners is obstructed should be marked with either temporary wooden stakes or other markers of a more permanent nature.  The location of any markers to be set should be discussed with your surveyor and agreed upon prior to the start of the survey work.

With most surveys excepting a certain few types such as construction surveys and surveys for FEMA elevation certificates you should be provided with a survey plan.  The information shown on this plan will vary according to the type of survey performed but at a minimum shall meet the following standards:

Rhode Island state regulations

Massachusetts state regulations

ALTA / ACSM title survey standards
