Topographic Surveys

A topographic survey (commonly called a topo) is a survey which gathers information about the natural and man-made features of the land as well as its elevations (vertical differences based upon a common plane or datum).  Using this data a three dimensional plan can be prepared.  A topo plan is the basis for most sitework including new dwelling and commercial building construction, roadway and infrastructure design and construction and septic design among others.  The process of creating a topographic plan consists of:

  • Establishing horizontal and vertical control to be used as the basis for the survey

  • Determining the location and elevation of a sufficient number of ground points to provide enough data to accurately represent the elevations and features of the subject property

  • Locating the required natural and man-made features as determined by the purpose of the survey

  • Computation of the survey data

  • Preparation of the topographic  plan
